Wigtown Brewery beer mug

Glass half pint beer mug with handle.  Etched on the side is  AITCHISON'S PALE ALE & STOUTS.  THE BREWERY WIGTOWN and the official measure stamp V.R. 324.  The initials V.R. stand for VICTORIA REGINA and show the mug was issued during Victoria's reign.   Wigtown, like most towns, had its own brewery .  It was situated in Botany off High Vennel, just north of the main square.  It was in production by the 1820s and closed early in the 20th century.  Aitchisons was an Edinburgh brewery and may have had an interest in the Wigtown Brewery.
