Hardie had been the subject of several full-scale biographies
and many essays. The authorised biography by William Stewart
was published by the ILP in 1921. As Stewart was a loyal
supporter of Hardie and wrote with the widow and daughter looking
over his shoulder there could be no mention of Hardie's
illegitimate birth, his relationship with Sylvia Pankhurst, his
character flaws, or his limitations as a party leader.
