Knife sheath (kozuka)

This kozuka (a handle for a small knife) is decorated with birds.  Kozuka often fit through a hole in the tsuba (hand guard), into a pocket on the scabbard.  They would have been used for tasks such as opening letters rather than as a weapon. Can you imagine a samurai trying to fight off an enemy with a blade that small!
