Small parade axe
This object is a late 16th century ceremonial axe
which would have been used for parades and other special
occassions. It is made of steel and has a highly decorated haft and
head. Rather than being used as a practical tool or weapon, an
ornate parade axe such as this would have been used to signify
power and authority as part of a soldier's dress uniform.
The axe has a fleur-de-lys design in the cheek of its head, with
a slightly drooped pick emerging from the back of the axe butt. The
axe haft is decorated with both geometric and leaf designs.
