Instead of trying to capture a physical likeness of the sea, MacColl focuses on the changes in the weather that cause the seaview to constantly change. He observes how Ailsa Craig, a well known and loved feature of the Ayrshire coastline, is sometimes "clearly there, then it is lost, bleached out in the sunshine or lost in a smirr or rain".
