Brodick Bay, Arran

Glasgow born painter Kay was influenced by the Dutch School of painting, evident in this view across Brodick Bay with its realist rendering and vast and atmospheric sky.  The sea occupies a tiny portion of the canvas by comparison with the land and vast sky but glinting in the sunlight it draws the eye to it as the focal point of the scene.   Kay trained at Glasgow School of Art and in Paris. He was primarily and landscape painter and often painted on the west coast and in the Western Highlands as well as travelling extensively in Europe.
