Maker’s mark: “HINCH / LIFFE” (impressed) Assay marks: lion rampant, tree (Glasgow) Date mark: “L” (1830) Duty mark: head of George IV   Up until the 1700s forks were considered a sign of excessive delicacy and most people preferred to eat with a knife and their fingers.
