Fouled anchor

This is caught by a length of rope, and is known as a “fouled” anchor.    Dumfries was the centre of a large port that straddled the River Nith, including the town itself, and also Carsethorn, Kingholm Quay, Kelton and Glencaple.  At one time the port of Dumfries stretched as far east as the River Annan and as far west as the River Urr.
