Maker’s mark: “DG” Dumfries town marks: fouled anchor, unicorn's head Other mark: “G”   Tea was naturally bitter, and sugar made it taste more pleasant.  During the 1700s sugar came from cane grown on Caribbean plantations where it flourished in the hot sunshine, heavy rainfall and fertile soil.
