The Poetical Works of Robert Burns
Souvenir pocket book of Burns' poems with mauchline ware front and back covers. The front cover bears a black transfer print of Tam O'Shanter and Souter Johnnie with four lines of verse below. The book was probably purchased on a visit to Burns Monument at Alloway. The inscription reads:
TAM O'SHANTER & SOUTER JOHNNY / BOUGHT IN THE MONUMENT / "And at his elbow, Souter Johnnie / His ancient, trusty, drouthy cronie / Tam lo'ed him like a nera brither / They had been fou for meeks thegither!"
W and A Smith of Mauchline, Ayrshire developed the manufacture of transfer printed treen, or wooden ware which became highly popular as gifts and souvenirs. Later, they used photographs instead of transfers.
