Mauchline ware needle case

Small circular wooden canister used for keeping needles.  On the front there is a large oval sepia photograph depicting "CARLISLE CATHEDRAL".  The inside of the base of the canister is partially lined in pale blue velvet.  Remnants of dark blue embossed paper is pasted on the base.   W & A Smith of Mauchline, Ayrshire developed the manufacture of transfer printed treen, or wooden ware which became highly popular as gifts and souvenirs. Later, they used photographs instead of transfers.
