Mauchline ware needle book covers (1)

This pair of wooden book boards would have been used as the front and back covers of a needle book.  Each board has a flat inner surface finished with plain paper lining, while the curved outer surface features black transfer print inscriptions.  The inscriptions read:   (left) "The thresher's weary flinging-tree / The lee-lang day had tired me; / And whan the day had clos'd hid e'e, / Far i' the west, / Ben i' the spence, right pensivelie, / I gaed to rest." (right) "Warranted / Part of the Barn Roof of MOSSGIEL / while occupied by / BURNS."   (1 set of 3 shown)
