Creetown Quarries

The Creetown granite quarries are one of Galloway's best known traditional industries.  They provided material for the construction of Liverpool docks as well as for many buildings in Newton Stewart and Creetown.  The quarried blocks were transported by light railway to a yard on the other side of the A75 for dressing and then shipped out from an adjacent quay on the Cree estuary.  The quarries are still in occasional use not only for industrial but also for artistic purposes: in recent times two well known sculptors have carved granite on the actual quarry site.
