Garlieston

For a hundred years Garlieston was a busy seaport not only for cargo ships but also with regular steamer links with north-west England and Liverpool.  Related activities included rope making and shipbuilding.  Ships of 100 tons were built.  However the coming of the railway in the late 19th century severely reduced Garlieston's maritime trade.  The decline is symbolised by this picture, where the size of the boat, the yard, and the labour force indicate a small-scale industry.
