William Marshall

William Marshall and some of his extended family on the road between Newton Stewart and Creetown. Blackcraig Hill is in the distance. The wagon is typical of the sort used by Galloway Travellers and held all the family’s possessions – bedding, clothing, pots, pans, plates and cooking gear. When fully loaded there would have been little room for passengers and most members of a Travelling family had little choice but to walk alongside. The wagon has a canvas cover over timber hoops; this could be lifted from the vehicle and, as shown in other photographs in this booklet, used as a tent.
