  'Farm Windmill, Shortrig Farm, Hoddom, Dumfriesshire, 1977   The surviving large tower windmill must have preceded the horsemill alongside it. It probably dates from the end of the eighteenth century. Both horse power and wind power were used for threshing. The threshing machine stood in the adjoining octangular building.   Duncow. A good example of an early tower mill dating from the late seventeenth century. A massive structure with a marked batter.   Dumfries Museum, formerly a farm windmill   Mouswald Grange. The windmill tower, c. 1812, has a pronounced batter. A typical farm windmill it was used for threshing power.'   Dr Kissling's note, 1978
