Still Life with Fruit
Robert
MacBryde was a Maybole-born artist who was best
known for his figurative paintings and still-life, as well as his
work as a theatre set designer. Following studies at the Glasgow
School of Art and travels in Europe, MacBryde moved to London with
his partner Robert Colquhoun. 'The Two Roberts', as they were
known, enjoyed a period of renown as the 'Golden Boys of Bond
Street' during the 1940s.
During MacBryde's time in London, he was heavily
influences by friend and mentor Jankel Adler, whose Cubist
influence can be seen in MacBryde's art. For a time, MacBryde was
even nicknamed 'MacBraque' in reference to famed Cubist artist
Georges Braque.
