Stiff Climb

This is a view of a road on the outskirts of Helensburgh where James Guthrie was living for a time. He often chose to work with pastels and became very accomplished in this medium.   Guthrie was born in Greenock and went to University in Glasgow where he studied Law.  However, around the time he turned 20 he decided to pursue a career in art. He became one of the most prominent members of the Glasgow Boys. He spent summer months painting with the Boys at Cockburnspath and Brig O'Turk. In later years he turned to portraiture in which he enjoyed considerable success. He was made President of the RSA in 1902.
