Sea Maidens
In the 1890s Thomas William Bromley Blacklock moved away from
realism of his earlier work and began to depict a world of
legend and fantasy. This mysterious seascape peopled with mermaids
and fairy like figures is typical of his later work.
Blacklock was a native of Kirkcudbright. He trained in Edinburgh
and spent much of his adult life painting in the Lothians and
Perthshire. He did however return to Kirkcudbright several years
before his death and was, during that time, associated with the
Kirkcudbright artist's colony.
