William Strang was a Scottish painter born in Dumbarton in 1859.
He is known for working in many mediums with a range of techniques,
including etching, drypoint, mezzotint, woodcut, and lithography.
He was one of the original members of the Royal Society of
Painter-Etchers and Engravers, adn his work was part of their first
exhibition in 1881. Strang retired from the Society in 1902 in
protest of the inclusion of reproductions in their exhibitions.
Strang produced a number of paintings through his career,
including landscapes and portraits. Distinguished people of his era
such as writers Thomas Hardy and Sir Henry Newbolt are known to
have sat for him.
