Kirkcudbright Castle
MacLellan's Castle in Kirkcudbright was started in the 1580's by
Sir Thomas MacLellan of Bombie. The building was never properly
finished after his family fell on leaner times in the 17th Century.
By the start of the 18th Century the castel had been deserted.
The artist David Gauld was born and trained in Glasgow but his
interest in the decorative aspects of painting drew him to the
Kirkcudbright School of artists. One can see in this painting some
of the decorative techniques these artists used - broad brush
strokes, areas of flat colour and lines outlining shapes.
Gauld was also a stained glass designer and was a friend of
Charles Rennie MacIntosh.
