Junk Girl
A junk is a type of Chinese ship. Eleanor Allen Moore
(sometimes known by her married name Robertson) lived in Shanghai
and painted the local people in their own environments, going about
their daily business. This girl's family, probably
even herself, would have worked on the junks.
Eleanor
Allen Moore was born in Northern Ireland but moved to Scotland
with her family as a child. They settled in Ayrshire when she was 6
and she attended Kilmarnock Academy for a short period before
studying at Glasgow School of Art. In 1922 she married a doctor and
moved with him to China when he took up a post in the Public Health
Department in Shanghai.
