Gypsy Encampment

William Mouncey was a Scottish artist based in Kirkcudbright. Mouncey followed his father's footsteps as a house painter and decorator before becoming a full-time artist in 1886. Mouncey spent most of his life in Kirkcudbright, and was deeply inspired by the rich and colourful country scenery around him, and he became known for his landscapes of the area and use of the impasto technique.    Early in Mouncey's career, fellow Kirkcudbright artist EA Hornel was a great source of encouragement and advice. Mouncey married Hornel's sister Margaret, however Mouncey and his friend Hornel's relationship later soured.
