Grey Sea, Arran

Sir James Lawton Wingate, who trained at Glasgow School of Art, specialised increasingly in landscapes as his career developed. He was influenced by William McTaggart and like him, became particularly interested in atmospheric effects and light. He often found inspiration in the dramatic skies of Arran.   Wingate became one of the leading Scottish landscape painters and was made President of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1919.
