Dunure Castle
Dunure Castle has been a ruin since the mid-seventeenth century.
Located on the coast looking out over Ayr Bay, it was the seat of
the Kennedys of Carrick who had owned the land since 1357. In
August 1563, Mary Queen of Scots stayed at the castle for a few
days, the guest of the 4th Earl of Cassillis, Gilbert Kennedy.
The artist, Sir D. Y. Cameron,
painted many Scottish landscapes in this uncluttered style. There
are a number of his works in the collections of South West
Scotland.
