Adoration of the Shepherds
Benjamin Cuyp came from a family of painters from the Dutch town
of Dodtrecht. His nephew Aelbert Cuyp (1620 - 91) was the most
famous of the family specialising in landscapes that were close in
style to French painter, Claude Lorraine. Benjamin himself painted
scenes from ordinary life as well as biblical subjects. His work
shows the influence of Rembrandt.
At the centre of the scene depicted here is the Holy Infant's
crib. On its side is written Cuyp's signature and the date,
1651.
