The word "rapier" generally refers to a primarily thrusting weapon, it was the civilian weapon of choice for self-defence and duelling as it allowed for fast reactions and a longer reach for combat. The rapier was also extremely fashionable throughout Europe with the wealthier classes being worn as an accessory for clothing.
