'The Norwegian Connection', newspaper feature part 1

First of two features from a local newspaper on the long-standing links between Norway and Dumfries.   The first article details the historical connections linking Norway with Scotland, going back to the time when Robert the Bruce and Haakon the Fifth signed a friendship treaty. The second article details the story of local man, Noel Dinwiddie, and his experiences of the Norwegians he befriended during wartime.   Noel Dinwiddie was a printer and stationer with premises in the High Street near the Midsteeple in Dumfries. In 1941, he established The Scottish Norwegian Society, along with one of the Norwegian Officers, Major Olaus Myrseth, who was billeted at the Station Hotel. Its objectives were “to promote friendship, and to further cultural and commercial relations between the Scottish Norwegian peoples.”
