Roll of Honour
This framed Roll of Honour lists the names of 22 men and their
regiments. Above the title are two ovals pictures. One depicts the
Midsteeple in Dumfries High Street, and the other, the Maxwelltown
Burgh crest.
Memorials to men who fought in World War One come in all
shapes and sizes. This modest scroll commemorates 22 men who went
to war whilst employed by James Maxwell and Sons, Printers,
Lithographers and Bookbinders, High Street, Dumfries. One of the
men, Lt William Dinwiddie, was a member of the family of Robert
Dinwiddie who took over the business of James Maxwell c 1930.
Names were often added to a Roll of Honour at a work place or
in a local community building such as the town hall. They often
acknowledged those who served, those who were killed in action, as
well as those who volunteered but did not go to the
battlefield.
