Sandstone slab bearing characters from the runic alphabet or futhorc
This writing system was known in the Baltic region in 200 AD and many of the letters are based on the Roman and Greek alphabets. Whilst gothic lettering was established in southern Europe, migration carried the runic system north to Scandinavia, and then south and west into Germany, Holland and Britain.
The characters on this slab were probably copied from a book and inscribed by a stone mason in the late 19th/ early 20th century.
