Papal 'bulla' issued by Pope Clement II

This papal seal or 'bulla' authenticated documents sent from Rome to Christian churches across Europe.  The find site was the location of the Northumbrian church of St Cuthbert, probably in the 9th century, and this object is almost certainly associated with that church.   An irregular circular lead disc struck on both sides with the Pope's name on the obverse, and the heads of St Peter and St Paul on the reverse.
