Kilwinning Market Cross

This wooden cross used to sit on top of Kilwinning’s medieval stone market cross which can be found at the east end of the main Street. A series of wooden crosses were installed on its top. This one was made in 1956 when the cross was restored to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s visit to the town. The original stone cross was octagonal in section and carved in the late gothic style with heads and foliage. Today’s cross was commissioned by Irvine Development Corporation from their artist in residence, Iain Cooper, in 1982.
