Inscribed stone
Smoothly cut block of granite with religious lettering engraved on both sides. "I H S" represents the first three letters of the name "Jesus" in the Greek alphabet (Jesus Hominem Salvator - Jesus Saviour of Man).
This stone was discovered having been reused as a kerbstone in Three Crowns Close, Dumfries, close to the premises of Edgar Bell, painter. It is thought to originate from St Gregory’s Lodging which was in this area.
