Cross-carved stone
This is a sculptured stone of a cross and sword from Kirkandrews
old burial ground.
Bears and equal armed cross set on a shouldered shaft, carved in
relief.
The arms expand from 9cm in width at the intersection to 13cm at
the extremities. A triangular incision in the arms gives them a
somewhat heart-shaped form.
There is a two edged sword with a straight grip and guard.
On the upper end of the stone is cut a circle, 25cm in diameter
with straight lines radiating from the centre. The lines have been
roughly cut and appear to be of a later date - suggesting that an
attempt has been made to convert the stone into a sundial.
The stone is now kept at the Stewartry Museum
