Two Bronze Brooches

The smaller of the two brooches is a fine bronze penannular brooch, found in a medieval grave during excavations at Whithorn. It would have only been suitable for use on light cloths, such as fine linen or silk, and may have been used for pinning a light item such as a head-scarf or wimple.   The larger brooch, with its zig-zag scorped decoration is probably 15th century in date - a similar brooch was found at Urquhart Castle.
