Volume 3 of The Spectator in 8 Volumes

This volume belonged to William Burns, the father of the poet Robert Burns. Magazines like the Spectator were a new literary medium by means of which current ideas and opinion were disseminated among a growing reading public during the 18th Century. Although a working farmer, William Burns was an educated man. He is an example of the widespread literacy which existed in Scotland at that time.
