Basket-Hilted Broadsword
This sword's steel hilt consists of a large oblate pommel and a basket guard. The steel is now blackened but was originally gilt and is encrusted with silver foliage.
The sword has a very broad two-edged blade and a fish skin grip. On the blade is an inscription which includes the name Andrea Ferara, a well known sword manufacturer.
This type of basket-hilt is the ancestor of the Scottish basket-hilts and the silver encrusting is very characteristic of English sword hilts and knife handles of the first half of the 17th century.
