Piece of antler waste, Whithorn

The base of a red deer antler. The completeness of the base shows that the antler was naturally shed, an annual occurence, rather than cut from a dead animal. The upper end is sawn, with clear saw marks and cuts, where the useful elements of the antler, the beam and tines, have been removed.   The excavations at Whithorn revelaed a number of antler workshops, dating from the 10th to 12th centuries.
