Gold ingot

This ingot and an associated length of gold rod were found in what was probably a precious metal workshop serving the 7th century monastery at Whithorn.  A small group of stone moulds, silver objects and crucibles (for melting metal) were also found in the vicinity of the workshop.   Small ingot with hammer marks on the upper surface.  The lack of striations on the upper surface shows it was made by hammering rather than trimming with a knife.
