'Rekollekshuns of a Skoolmaster', The Clown Part 4, 1875

The earliest work by Sir J M Barrie which survives today was written at Dumfries Academy for this school magazine. It was founded by his friend Wellwood Anderson, and is a manuscript magazine, intended to circulate from hand to hand. The magazine consists of four numbers, issued from May to August 1875.  Barrie contributed four articles headed - Rekollekshuns of a Skoolmaster: by James Barrie, Esq. MA, ASS, LLD, Etc., written with intentionally bad grammar and spelling.   Barrie's friendship with Wellwood Anderson was to continue throughout their lives.  It is clear that Barrie felt a great affection for "Wedd" and that Anderson was a considerable influence on the young Barrie.  Anderson was the son of the owner of a bookshop and library and as Barrie loved books, this connection must have delighted him; it meant that he was able to browse in the shop for as long as he wanted to.
