Selection of optical lenses, prisms and eyepieces

The refractor telescope uses a set of curved glass lenses (which change the direction of the light as it passes through them) to produce an image.   The reflecting telescope uses a concave mirror to reflect the light and produce an initial image which may then be manipulated by lenses.
