Bruce's Castle, Turnberry

Turnberry Castle in Ayrshire is believed to have been the birthplace of Robert the Bruce in 1274. The castle was the home of his mother, the Countess of Carrick. According to legend, Robert de Bruce was brought captive to the castle where he and the Countess fell in love, were married and had their first child, Robert the Bruce.   Robert Bryden included this engraving in his book "Ayrshire Monuments". The book is a complilation of prints of Ayrshire sites that relate to significant people and events in Scotland's history. It was his hope that these sites would be cherished as reminders of the rich history of the region and of Scotland.
