National Heroes
South-west Scotland boasts two extraordinary heroes of national
renown, both great warriors, but very different; one who came from
nowhere in an age obsessed with status to become Scotland's
Guardian, the other a high-born political opportunist who succeeded
where the other had failed. Surely both though are summed up in a
quote from the Treaty of Arbroath; "It is not for glory, nor
riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom - for
that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself".
