Rapier hilt (1)

Rapiers are commonly recognised by their long thin blades designed for thrusting rather than cutting and their elaborately decorated hand guards. Some of the craftsmanship involved in producing these fine weapons was truly remarkable and areas such as Toledo in Spain soon became centres of excellence for their manufacture. No nobleman’s outfit was complete until he owned some Toledo steel, worn for show as much for anything else.  This one has very detailed decoration around its hilt showing the astounding level of craftmanship that sword makers owned in the 16th century.  It has a classic 'cup' hand-guard.
