"The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy"

This book, "The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy", belonged to Robert Burns' wife, Jean Armour and was used by her in the family's home in Burns Street, Dumfries.  She is recorded as describing Burns'  taste in food thus, "At all meals he had a book beside him on the table.  He was fond of plain things and hated tarts, pies and puddings."   Jean Armour Burns continued to live in the family home following the poet's death in 1796.  She remained there for the rest of her life and by the time of her own death in 1834, the house had become a place of pilgrimage.
