Necklace by Jessie King (1)
Necklace of gold, moonstones and enamel in the form of five pendants on a gold chain, designed by Jessie M. King for Liberty and Co., London, c. 1900. Moonstones were a favourite stone of the period, often used in jewellery worn by suffragettes.
By about 1900, some women were able to earn a living in the arts by teaching and designing. Glasgow School of Art was central to the development of female artistic talent in Scotland. Jessie Marion King (1875 - 1949) attended the School of Art and later went on to teach there. She had a prodigeous talent, which led her to work in a variety of media. She inspired others through ventures such as the Green Gate Close, a studio shared by women in Kirkcudbright.
