Set of Dumfries Standard Troy Weights, 1824/1826
Set of 9 Dumfries Standard Troy Weights, 1824/1826. Verification stamps are present on all the weights; George IV, 1824 and a portcullis, indicating that they were working standards, used to check that traders' weights were giving fair measure. Troy weights were used by specialists such as gold and silver merchants. All other trade dealings were in Avoirdupois weights.
It was only after the Imperial Weights and Measures Act of 1824 that Scottish weights and measures gradually disappeared, to be replaced by English or Imperial measures.
