Set of Dumfries Standard Troy Weights, 1824/1826

Set of 9 Dumfries Standard Troy Weights, 1824/1826.  Verification stamps are present on all the weights; George IV, 1824 and a portcullis, indicating that they were working standards, used to check that traders' weights were giving fair measure.  Troy weights were used by specialists such as gold and silver merchants.  All other trade dealings were in Avoirdupois weights.   It was only after the Imperial Weights and Measures Act of 1824 that Scottish weights and measures gradually disappeared, to be replaced by English or Imperial measures.   weight (1 pound) height 42mm, diameter (top) 66mm, diameter (base) 43mm Inscription: rim (top) - Burgh of Dumfries / 1826 / 1lb Troy, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (6 ounce) height 32mm, diameter (top) 54mm, diameter (base) 35mm Inscription: rim (top) - 6oz Troy, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (3 ounce) height 27mm, diameter (top) 43mm, diameter (base) 29mm Inscription: rim (top) - 3oz Troy, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (2 ounce) height 22mm, diameter (top) 35mm, diameter (base) 26mm Inscription: rim (top) - 2oz Troy, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (1 ounce) height 16mm, diameter (top) 30mm, diameter (base) 21mm Inscription: rim (top) - 1oz Troy, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (10 pennyweights) height 13mm, diameter (top) 23mm, diameter (base) 16mm Inscription: rim (top) - 10 Dwts, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (5 pennyweights) height 10mm, diameter (top) 19mm, diameter (base) 14mm Inscription: rim (top) - 5 Dwts, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (3 pennyweights) height 8mm, diameter (top) 16mm, diameter (base) 12mm Inscription: rim (top) - 3 Dwts, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824 weight (2 pennyweights) height 6mm, diameter (top) 8mm, diameter (base) 10mm Inscription: rim (top) - 1 Dwts, base (stamping) - GR IV / 1824
