Gallon measure from Wigtown
Bronze measure for a Union gallon issued to Wigtown Burgh in 1707. It is decorated with the royal crest and the crests of England, Scotland and Ireland and carries the inscription ANNA. MAG. BRITTNA. HIBERN. REGINA. 1707 (Anne Queen of Britain and Ireland).
Following the Act of Union in 1707 there was an attempt to rationalise Scotland's system of weights and measures and all burghs were ordered to follow the English system. The weights and measures acquired in 1707 by Wigtown are one of the most complete sets surviving in Scotland.
