Measuring stick, 1762

This measuring stick was found in the Midsteeple, Dumfries, and would have belonged to the Dean of Guild of the Town Council.  It measures 2 feet and is marked in 3 inch graduations by steel pins.  It is hand carved on one side.   Detail: side - crown motif / JR / 1762 / 7/2 / 38 reverse  - squared "M" motif   All stallholders in the town had to calibrate their scales and measuring sticks according to the Town Council's set of weights and measures.
