The South West of Scotland over the years has offered a wide range of holiday destinations and activities for people from Glasgow, the rest of the United Kingdom and tourists from abroad, from Golf to Spas and for the scenery. In times past the journey itself was part of the event as hundreds of Scots made the annual trip 'Doon the Watter' to Ayr or Girvan. Although the South West still attracts visitors with its traditional attractions such as Robert Burns, in recent years the advent of cheap flights has meant that domestic tourists are able to travel elsewhere in the world much easier. Tourism is now however the regions number 1 industry, employing thousands.
